Great comment Awoody! I totally agree. I was astounded to see this quotation so widely used by atheists all over the internet and yet nobody seems to have bothered to confirm it. And you're right - there was no conflict over whether or not the Earth was round in Galileo's day. Most informed people, including the Church, adhered to Aristotle's doctrines and a round Earth was central (literally) to his natural philosophy.

Another false quotation that is often attributed to Galileo is that he murmured "And yet it moves" at his trial after formally renouncing heliocentricism.

Another quote that you see everywhere is usually attributed to Magellan, and sometimes to Galileo: "The church says the earth is flat, but I know that it is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in a shadow than in the church."
There's no record of this line before 1873 when Robert Ingersoll used it. It's also clearly false because it assumes the 19th century Conflict Theory 'Flat Earth' idea, which has since been rejected by science historians.
It's ironic that so many 'skeptics' are willing to spread these quotes without checking their facts...or is skepticism only about questioning things you disagree with?
