Satan spoils the fun once again

In a previous post I touched on the problems inherent in invoking supernatural explanations. I said, in part:

Perhaps Jesus was not God-incarnate but was possessed by Satan, who not only has control over demons but could also make people believe that Jesus rose from the dead. After all, just think for a moment about how many different things Christians attribute to Satan.

A Christian posting on the RichardDawkins.net Forums was kind enough to unintentionally provide me with an illustration of just what I meant by that:

Satan has been very successful in confusing a large part of the Christian world. His one aim is to draw people away from God. He attacks Christianity as much and in every way as he can. — Matt

Perhaps that is what Satan wants Matt to believe! This Christian assumes that since, according to his Christian faith, Christianity must be true, then Satan, because he is evil, must be trying to subvert Christianity. But what if, instead, Christianity is false, and Satan has been very successful in confusing a large part of the world that it is true and thereby drawing people away from God’s true religion (whatever that is)? Can Matt refute my explanation? No matter what he says, I can simply reply that he is only saying that because Satan has blinded him and has tricked him into believing it!

Bottom Line: Once you accept the existence of a powerful, deceitful entity such as Satan, all bets are off. You have undermined your own ability to argue that any particular supernatural explanation is valid and not the work of this powerful, deceitful entity.
