Harmit Bhangu
Here’s yet another theist who probably should have told his gOd to shut up:
—– Man Says God Told Him To Kill Truck Driver (KPAX.com; Jan 13)
A Canadian man who stabbed a Ronan truck driver at a Minnesota rest stop says God ordered him to kill the driver.
Harmit Bhangu appeared in a Fargo North Dakota court Tuesday morning on charges of second degree attempted murder.
The victim, Dale Morigeau, 51, of Ronan was stabbed 4 to 5 times in the abdomen Sunday. The attack happened at the Interstate 94 rest area in Moorhead.
Police say the assault was still happening when they arrived. They shouted at the suspect to stop, but had to use a taser to subdue him.
Police say they were able to get to the scene quickly thanks to witnesses who called in right away.
Bhangu’s bail is set at $1 million. He was also placed on medication to keep him from being violent in jail.
—– Mental Exam Next Step In Rest-Stop Stabbing Case (Dave Olson/Inforum.com; March 10)
Clay County authorities Monday dismissed a civil action seeking to have Harmit Bhangu committed indefinitely, but the man charged with attempted murder may still face commitment for mental issues, a prosecutor said.
The civil action against Bhangu had to be dismissed because a statutory deadline for completing the necessary mental evaluation was nearing, Assistant Clay Count Attorney Jenny Samarzja told Clay County District Court Judge Galen Vaa during a hearing Monday.
Samarzja said a doctor who was handling the case had been unable to find the necessary interpreter to talk to Bhangu, who faces charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon for a Jan. 11 incident at the Interstate 94 rest stop outside Moorhead.
Bhangu is accused of stabbing a truck driver eight to 10 times. Bhangu told police God told him to do it, according to court documents.
The victim, Dale Morigeau, of Montana, survived the attack.
Clay County Attorney Brian Melton said Bhangu is being held in a state security hospital in St. Peter, Minn., pending the outcome of a mental evaluation ordered as part of the criminal case.
He said the evaluation is designed to determine whether Bhangu has the mental capacity to assist with his own defense and whether he was able to understand right and wrong at the time of the acts he is accused of committing.
Melton said it is possible the evaluation being done as part of the criminal case could lead to Bhangu being committed to a hospital like the one in St. Peter for an in indefinite amount of time.
Bhangu is from Canada, but Melton said he didnt know whether the 32-year-old, who is originally from India, is a Canadian citizen.
NOTE: I’m still waiting for theists to forthrightly step up and accept the challenge I issued after posting three similar stories on March 6. Just in case you missed it, here’s that challenge once again:
If YOU happen to be a theist – and especially if you happen to be a theist who thinks you’re on gOd’s good side – please tell your deity to stop telling people to do awful things at your earliest convenience, ok? Thanks!
And if you could tell all the other theists you know to NOT listen to gOd if he/she/they/it tells them to kill someone, I’d really appreciate it.
In fact, if you could convince even one priest or minister or rabbi or imam to stand up and give a sermon or speech about how morality requires people to disobey gOd when he orders them to kill or engage in other violence, that would be great!
Maybe – just maybe – it’ll reach the ears of someone who really needs to hear it.
And maybe the failure to speak out increases the odds of more of these horrible stories happening in the future….
(If you’re a theist who’s with me on this, please leave a note saying so. If you’re not with me, please explain why. Thanks!)
*Patiently listening to the ticking of my clock as hundreds of millions of theists remain silent*
