Overturning the “provider refusal” regulation
I received the following message this morning from the Center for Inquiry:
The Obama administration is proposing a rule to overturn the “provider refusal” regulation. The overturning regulation is going through the usual process, including a comment period through April 9.
Please send a comment right now. It doesn’t have to be very long, just a few sentences saying, in effect, please remove this rule because it could hurt a lot of people who need health services, including not only abortion and contraception but also HIV/AIDS and end-of-life services–any services where ideology could interfere with medical assistance.
To send a comment, go to http://www.regulations.gov. When the page comes up, enter “Rescission proposal” in the keyword slot, and check the box underneath, “Select to find documents accepting comments and submissions.” When the title of the regulation, beginning with Rescission,” comes up, check “Comment or submission” under the title. A screen will come up with spaces for you name and your written or pasted message.DO IT NOW! Thanks!
Here is a more detailed description of what the provider refusal rule is:
The “provider refusal” regulation requires any organization providing reproductive health services that receives federal funds to certify in writing that it will not discriminate against any employee—from receptionist to doctor—who refuses to provide a service on the grounds that to do so offends her/his religious beliefs. The regulation was written so broadly that health care workers could refuse to provide information and services not only about abortion and contraception but also about any medical treatment they might ideologically object to, such as fertility, HIV/AIDS, and end-of-life directives.
