History Repeats
—– Dam Baptism Turns Tragic (The Herald/allAfrica.com; April 24)
HARARE, Zimbabwe: A member of an Apostolic sect drowned in a dam at Ranham Farm on the outskirts of Dzivaresekwa on Tuesday afternoon while being baptised.
The body of Shame Nevengo (37) was retrieved on Wednesday afternoon by the police sub-aqua unit.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said Nevengo, who was a Kuwadzana resident, and fellow members of the Revival of Moses Apostolic Church were worshipping at the dam when the incident occurred at around 4.30pm.
He said after the church service, the baptism session began under the supervision of Ezekiel Mbigi.
It is reported that during the session, Nevengo slipped and fell into the dam.
Insp Sabau said other church members waited for almost an hour in the hope that he would resurface but he did not.
A report was then made at Dzivaresekwa Police Station, who called in the sub-aqua unit.
Would Shame Nevengo still be alive today had I posted my recent entry about the dangers of baptism earlier and he had somehow managed to read it?
I wish I knew.
All I can say at this point is this: It couldn’t have made him any deader….
Nevengo’s body was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary….
