Great post James, and solid arguments - particularly about why most atheists don't focus on Eastern nor largely extinct religions (I would have thought the latter was obvious - but apparently not).

Few things irritate me more than when theists state "you don't believe in anything" - how pretentious is it to assume that religion, even if extended to "any religion", is the only thing to believe in and base your life's principles around.

That's my point, I had a massive intervention(?) so my presuppositions changed. I can see internal consistency in your system and mine but without God making Himself obvious, what's the point? My best friend is an atheist; we've been friends since we were 4.

If you take all the hype and feelings out of it and argue openly and fairly, you arrive at your different presuppositions. That's the best I can discern, but I'm always evaluating.

I had the opposite life experience. A lifetime Christian turned skeptical atheist. It would take a massive revelation to convince me there is any truth to Christian theology. With that said, I agree that we should always keep evaluating. If I didn't evaluate what I believed, I would still be a Christian.

I'm an agnostic recently embracing Christianity. I was an agnostic for most of my life so I appreciate argument for its own sake and appreciate that you've presented your case well here.

In geometry, we regulary stipulated a couple of things that seemed obvious in order to do a proof and reach a conclusion that works. I feel that all people do this who are bothering to pursue any big thing. I presuppose things that I did not presuppose a year ago.

If you're comfortable with your position, I think you should hold it firmly but keep evaluating. What else can any of us do? It's when we stop the process that nothing new can happen.
