This is an interesting quotation that I pulled from a recent article by Sam Harris:

"But the problem is actually much worse than this: for even if we had multiple, contemporaneous, first-hand accounts of the miracles of Jesus, this would still not constitute sufficient support for the central tenets of Christianity. Indeed, first-hand accounts of miracles are extremely common, even in the 21st century. I’ve met scores of educated men and women who are convinced that their favorite Hindu or Buddhist guru has magic powers, and many of the miracles that they describe are every bit as outlandish as those attributed to Jesus. Stories about yogis and mystics walking on water, raising the dead, flying without the aid of technology, materializing objects, reading minds, foretelling the future are circulating right now, in communities where the average levels of education, access to information, and skeptical doubt are far higher than we would expect of first century fishermen and goatherds."

My apologies for the delay, was reduced to dial-up for limited access over the last ten days or so.

Due to what I saw as some basic misunderstandings I thought it best to clarify some issues otherwise I would just hear the same things repeated; it was also becoming rather large and time consuming. I may come back to specifics at a later point after I see your responses.

[...] In the interest of not making this post longer than it already is, I’ll be responding to the rest of the material brought up in two additional posts. The first will discuss my own position compared to Darthcynic’s caricature and bias. Second, I’ll address reason, science, and the supernatural, which Darthcynic brought up in Reason – Not Personal Philosophy. [...]

I'll be responding to this post in more detail on my blog along with a response to your other post. However, I notice that this post here does not address specific arguments regarding specific Biblical problems you brought up in either the Old or New Testament. Instead, it focuses on more general issues that came up, seems to drop NT issues entirely, and seems to shift the OT issues from one of internal inconsistancy to historically unreliable (single questionable source). Do you plan to address more specific issues in a later post or is it your intent to simplify the discussion by dropping those issues and focus primarily on the more general issues raised here?
