James writes:
Try and actually understand the real position of people before you mouth off on them.
++++++
I'm going to use that, James. Bigots have not been raised to understand they have an obligation to seriously examine opposing views and construct a logical argument based on evidence in their replies. They instead grab for any idea they think supports their opinion and blast back with a reply. Perhaps with embellishments like a string of explanation marks. In the Amazon forums I have taken to using the ignore button with bigots. I tell them I am voting them off the island. This infuriates them. If they respond with insults and name calling, I report them to Amazon and that's the end of them. Problem solved. It is one tool in our conversational intolerance bag.

She is afraid. She is afraid of what she might lose. She is afaid that she will lead children down a path from which they will not return. I hope she can keep up the dialog. I hope that you can keep up the conversation and change her with kindness.

When I encounter people like that I always ask them if the world is round or flat. And how seriously would they take a person who insisted the world was flat.
It's like that with creation, I than say.

I was a homeschool kid who got fed lots of BS about evolution in my high school curriculum. My interest in evolution was sparked indirectly by my interest in Astronomy when I took the introductory course in college. We learned about cosmology and and the big bang, and it made a lot of sense actually! And I couldn't help but see that biological evolution fits hand-i-glove with this view, and special creationism does not. Then I checked out a book called "A River out of Even" by Richard Dawkins from the library (along with other books on evolution) and the rest is history :)
